How to Choose the Right Scanner

Buying a scanner can be confusing. Analog vs. Digital? Trunking vs. Conventional? To find the right one, you simply need to know what you want to listen to.

⚠️ The Golden Rule: Check Before You Buy

Before buying any scanner, check the RadioReference Database for your local area. Look at the "Mode" column for the agency you want to hear:

  • "FM" / "FMN" = You need an Analog Scanner.
  • "P25" = You need a Digital P25 Scanner.
  • "DMR" / "NXDN" = You need a DMR/NXDN Scanner.
  • "E" Tag = Encrypted. No scanner can listen to this.

1. Police, Fire & EMS (Digital P25)

For modern public safety monitoring in cities, you need a digital scanner capable of decoding P25 Phase 1 & 2.

Scanner Model Best For Setup Type
Uniden BCD436HP Beginners & Pros. Easiest to use. Zip Code / Postal Code. (Database Included).
Uniden SDS100 Urban Areas. Solves simulcast distortion issues. Zip Code / Postal Code. (Database Included).
Uniden BCD325P2 Hobbyists who prefer manual programming. Manual or PC Programming Required.

2. Rail, Air, Marine & Racing (Analog)

If you listen to aviation, trains, marine, or auto racing, you don't need an expensive digital unit. Analog signals are clear, crisp, and easy to receive.

3. Budget & Multi-Use (Retevis / Retekess)

Sometimes you just want a simple, affordable way to listen to local businesses, security, or FRS/GMRS chatter. Retevis and Retekess radios offer incredible value for this.

Retevis / Retekess units make excellent, rugged, and inexpensive scanners for analog frequencies. They are perfect for keeping in a go-kit, giving to kids to listen in at an airshow, or using as a secondary receiver.

  • Rugged & Simple: Retevis analog handhelds are often cheaper than dedicated scanners and built tough.
  • Shortwave & FM: Retekess portables are great for listening to international broadcasts and local FM radio.
