In addition to extraordinary battery life, the elongated profile of the BL-5L adds roughly 1.5 inches to the bottom of the radio chassis. This transforms the compact UV-5R into a full-sized handheld, providing a solid, comfortable palm grip—especially when operating while wearing heavy work or tactical gloves. For maximum charging versatility, the pack features both standard base charging contacts for desktop cradles and an integrated 2.5mm direct DC charge jack for mobile vehicle and field charging.

An Amateur Radio Operator Certificate issued by Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED) (or an FCC Amateur License for US operators) is required to operate transmitting equipment on amateur frequencies. The BL-5L is precision-molded for the UV-5R chassis series. It fits the BF-TECH CA BF-F8RT, UV-5R, BF-F5XT, BF-F5XP, BF-F8, BF-F8X3, as well as Baofeng UV-5R, UV-5R V2+, BF-F8HP, and DM-5R. Note: This battery pack will not fit UV-82 series transceivers, which require the BL-8 battery.
