FRS & GMRS: The "No-License" Advantage in Canada

Looking for a simple "walkie-talkie" that just works? In Canada, you have two great license-free options: FRS (Family Radio Service) and GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service). Unlike in the US, you do not need a license to use GMRS radios in Canada.

FRS vs. GMRS: What's the Difference?

In Canada, all 22 channels are license-free. The only difference is the power limit, which gives you a clear choice between low-power and high-power channels:

  • High-Power Channels (1-7 & 15-22): These 15 channels are shared FRS/GMRS and are allowed up to 2.0 Watts of power. This is your best choice for maximum range.
  • Low-Power Channels (8-14): These 7 FRS channels are limited to 0.5 Watts of power. They are perfect for short-range communication or saving battery life.
