The DistribuComm COMMDISK 5" is a specialized, black matte ferrous metal disc backed by automotive-grade 3M VHB extra-strong adhesive, engineered to create an instant, permanent magnetic anchor anywhere you need it.
🔍 How It Works: RF Grounding on Aluminum vs. Fiberglass
The COMMDISK provides a ferrous surface for your magnet to adhere to, but performance depends on the vehicle material beneath it:
- Aluminum Bodies (e.g., Modern Ford F-150 / Super Duty): While magnets will not stick to aluminum, aluminum remains an exceptional electrical conductor. At VHF and UHF frequencies, the thin 3M VHB layer acts as a dielectric insulator, enabling capacitive RF coupling. Your antenna magnetically mounts to the disc and capacitively couples directly through to the aluminum body panel, delivering a large, effective ground plane for low SWR.
- Fiberglass, Poly, or Wood Surfaces (RVs, Campers, Canopy Caps, Boats): Fiberglass is non-conductive and cannot create an RF ground plane. Because a 5-inch disc alone is electrically too small to act as a full 1/4-wave counterpoise on VHF or CB frequencies, you should pair this mount with a No-Ground-Plane (NGP) or half-wave (1/2 wave) ground-independent antenna for optimal SWR performance.
⚠️ Maximum Antenna Length & Highway Safety Guidelines
This disc is engineered for compact, low-profile mobile antennas. Due to high-speed wind resistance and leverage shear forces, antennas should not exceed 24 to 36 inches in length. Do not use full-size 5/8-wave VHF whips, heavy center-loaded coils, or 102" CB whips, as excessive leverage can tip the magnetic base off the plate at highway speeds. For best results, allow the 3M VHB tape to fully cure for 24 hours at room temperature prior to attaching the antenna or driving at highway speeds.
